THE MALE FASHION DIVA

New Dancehall Phenomena: The Male Fashion Divas
By JAYMEFAMOUS

The new and often puzzling phenomenon that is hitting dancehall clubs throughout New York and abroad involves guys who high jack the video light from female party goers. This phenomenon is called “The Male Fashion Diva” syndrome and is used to describe a male whose behavior is caught somewhere between having male and female-like behavior qualities. In addition, he is often the first and last one to leave the video spotlight and is overly infatuated with himself. When observed from a distance [recommended], a “The Male Fashion Diva” would lead you to conclude that he is the type of person that turns himself on by looking in the mirror. As strange as this might sound, the Male Fashion Divas are increasingly showing their heads at dancehall parties and in neighborhood salons waiting in line to wax their chest hair or arch their eyebrows.

In the early and late nineties when dancehall music was at its peak, the thought of seeing a guy parading his “goods” in front of the video man was a rear sight. Back then, guys were too busy standing next to the selector’s turntable, drinking a beer with friends or trying to “lyrics” a female party goer. Things have changed drastically since then; now more and more guys are finding their way in front of the video light modeling their outfits, offering the price tag on jewelry or “tracing” a rival. Recently, a popular face in dancehall clubs in New York, whose name I will leave anonymous, was quoted to saying “mi hotter than dem” while proudly doing the male version of the cat walk for the video man. In another incident, a guy was seen “tracing” a female party goer for reasons only he knew; during this argument the lines “mi hotter than you” and “ah grudge yuh grudge mi cah mi cute” were directed towards the female. I’m sure that you and others could recall a few instances where you witnessed a popular face in dancehall clubs acting in a manner than would make you question his sexuality or simply stand in total disbelief at the thought of a man behaving in such a matter. You are not alone because there are hundreds of individuals like you that are disappointed by those “un-manly-like” behaviors and are hoping for a return of the days when Men act like Men at parties.

The pictures and videos that often surface on popular dancehall party websites would give you some idea of the “male fashion divas” I am referring to in this article. Mind you, I am not implying in any way, shape or form that guys who dress-up for clubs are “fruity,” because I’m sure that a lot of them are straight. However, like any behaviors that are adopted, there should be a limit to what is appropriate and wearing eye shadows, passion fruit lip gloss, disco dust, and make-up is not acceptable.

To conclude this article, the next time you see a guy whose behavior at a club fits the description of The Male Fashion Diva say “EXCUSE ME SIR “ STOP IT! “ Then walk away.

THIS ARTICLE IS NOT MEANT TO MAKE ANY ONE FEEL BAD, BUT YOU KNOW THE OLD SAYING “IF THE SHOE FITS WEAR IT,” SO IF THIS ARTICLE DOES NOT APPLY TO YOU THERE IS NO NEED TO GET MAD – BLESS. JAYMEFAMOUS
