The increase popularity in wearing fitted jeans is no news to patrons who frequent popular dancehall parties throughout New York. But despite the fact that it is considered a relatively old fashion trend in dancehall culture, a lot of soundmen refuse to shy away from openly venting their disapproval. To express this, they often resort to the unthinkable: associating the new fashion trend with homosexuality and encouraging partygoers to distance themselves from such individuals.
The question of why are a lot of soundmen against fitted jeans could be explained with, but not limited to the following reasons. Firstly, a lot of them are insecure about their physical appearance to even consider wearing fitted jeans. Secondly, they are insecure about their own sexuality to the extent that they worry about loosing their masculinity. Thirdly, a lot of them are arrogant in their way of thinking to justify using a person’s fashion taste as a way to determine his or her true sexuality. And lastly, they lack the knowledge, experience and talent needed to keep partygoers entertained without having to resort to throwing cheep insults a selected group of individuals within the party. The often verbal attacks against men who wear fitted jeans have not discouraged men who embrace the fashion trend since the benefits by far outweighs the negatives.
There are a number of benefits that men who wear fitted jeans enjoy the luxury of having and a few of these includes: less harassment from cops, more attention from females who admire the fashion, people are less inclined to judge you negatively by your appearance, and it makes you more approachable by the general public. Although the simplistic nature of the benefits would be consider irrelevant to some degree; in dancehall culture, being associated with homosexuality is almost criminal. This, of course, raises another question that makes it appear foolish to use the manner in which a person dresses as any direct indicator of his/her sexuality. For instance, since men who wear fitted jeans are considered “gay” in the eyes of soundmen, why is it then possible for “white males” to wear similar attire and still be considered straight? Shouldn’t he also be considered a homosexual because his pants are not three times his normal size? Makes no sense if you ask me, but the funny thing about this is that majority of those soundmen are good friends with guys who wear fitted jeans. Should we consider them “gay” because their friends choose to dress that way?
The fact that they spend so much time, and often willing to suspend playing music to comment on guy’s fashion choice raises questions about their sexuality. Could they be secretly admiring guys? Well, I’m quite certain that they will not openly confess, but from the looks of it they are desperately trying to keep the “closet” closed. Mind you, we all have the exclusive right by law and divine rule to speak out against any and everything under the sun, but as it is the case for anything else – there is a limited.
To conclude, It wouldn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that it is impossible to determine a person’s sexuality just by looking at the way he or she dresses. Wearing baggy jeans or behaving in a way that makes you seem more “masculine” than the average Tom, Dick and Harry doesn’t exclude a person from possibly being Gay. They come in various shapes, sizes, color and could easily be the one that is known to pop the most expensive bottle of champagne/Hennessey/Moet.
