New York Dancehall Promoters Aiming for Local Celebrity Status

local_celebrity_zoomThe other day I was thinking about the possible hidden motives that could explain why partygoers are increasingly becoming dancehall promoters. Naturally, the first thought that came to mind was that they are attracted to the potential to make a lot of money, but as we all know – not all motives are fueled by dollar signs. In fact, pride is typically the culprit, but for some, achieving local celebrity status with the titles “Diva, Fashionista, Goodas or Trendsetter” is the ultimate goal.

Mainstream promoters approach their craft differently; so instead of worrying about becoming local celebrities – they are more concerned with building a portfolio that is not limited to promoting parties at semi-mini-clubs (SweatBox). Local dancehall promoters on the other hand seem to be motivated by the idea of becoming the talk of neighborhood salons and barber shops. That is why it wouldn’t be surprising to see a local promoter featuring his or her self on a flyer dressed in an overly revealing outfit, or been sexually seduced by two attractive females in bed. Are they trying to promote their event with the notion that “sex sells” or are they trying to brand themselves as a local celebrity? Whatever the case may be, majority of them are striving to become New York’s dancehall celebrity at the expense of not only their reputation, but pockets as well.

Factually speaking, if you should compare the methods successful promoters use to promote their events (unless its porn related.); I’m almost certain that it wouldn’t include a picture of them posing semi-nude on flyers. In fact, most of them rely heavily on a well planned and executed promotional campaign that is not limited to posting five hundred bulletins on myspace over the course of two days. Local celebrity status wont pay bills; it’s a false sense of accomplishment without any clear rewards.

  1. Some of these promters have no clue as to what it entails to promote an event. They think they are elegant. Elegance is not nakedness. Someone need teach them the proper etiquettes of promoting .
