Dressing Not To Impress: Comfort Ova’ Fashion

Kadeem-HardisonA couple months ago when president Obama wore a loosely fitted jeans to throw the opening pitch at a Major League ALL-Star baseball game in St. Louis people were in uproar. Fashion magazines, blogs and gossip websites all described him as having bad taste in fashion and quickly labeled his pants as “mom jeans.” But according to the president, “those jeans are comfortable, and for those of you who want your president to look great in his tight jeans, I’m sorry — I’m not the guy. It just doesn’t fit me. I’m not 20.” Naturally, since most of my jeans are fitted, I couldn’t help but agree with the fashion critics that his pants were a too loose for a guy his size, but who am I to judge?

The president did something that many dancehall Fashionistas would love to do, but failed to act because they are concerned about what others might say. Moreover, they are fearful that their fellow dancehall patrons might think that they are unable to maintain the hype associated with been a fashion trendsetter. Sadly, their obsession with impressing others will not only result in a mountain of debt, but it will erect the feeling associated with being pretentious.

Looking back, I am almost certain that you could recall a few instances when you wore something that conflicted with your mood in order to not seem like the odd ball in the bunch. And if saving face wasn’t your number one priority at the time, you would have worn an outfit that allows you to breath freely. Similarly, if you observe the people within your immediate party circle, it wouldn’t take much to identify a few whose body language reveal that they are not entirely pleased with their outfit. Its not that their outfit isn’t visually pleasing, it’s the fact that they would love to have worn a simpler outfit.

To be a fashion trendsetter is a huge financial investment that will ultimately leave you with a few maxed out credit cards and a cluttered closet. And in this day and age – when the economy is at an all-time low, saving for a raining day is considered a wise choice. Wearing a simple, inexpensive outfit won’t make you any less of a human being. Like Obama, wear whatever that makes you feel comfortable, because at the end of the day – the individuals that you are trying to impress or out-dress at parties will not be left with an hefty credit card bill at the end of the month.
