What can we do to Restore Dancehall Music to its former Glory?
If I should use my fingers to count the amount of talented dancehall artists I came across while browsing Youtube and other social networking websites whose music is not limited to sex, drugs and the glorification of criminal mentality. I would have to enlist the help of close friends and family members. But unfortunately, the average follower of dancehall-hype-music wouldn’t give those talented artists the respect they deserve, because they are too distracted by gully-gaza music.
As a big fan of dancehall music from as far back as I could remember, I couldn’t help but notice a huge shift in the quality of music that is polluting the airwaves of Jamaican society. Today, majority of the songs that are finding its way outside the cesspool of some of these artists minds are eroding the foundation that was laid by dancehall’s forefathers. Continue reading →

The Most Overrated Dancehall Artists

1. Ding Dong – His vocal and lyrical limitations coupled with poor on stage performances is reason enough to encourage him to cut his “Holiday” short and return to dancing.
2. Spice – There can only be one queen of dancehall music and that is lady saw. Therefore, Spice’s lack of lyrical relevance and close to comedic onstage performances puts her nowhere close to the queen.
3. Vybz Kartel – I was a big fan of the infamous leader of Portmore Empire when he first stormed into the dancehall limelight. But over the past few years, I think that he has gotten too comfortable at the top and as a result lost the edge the once had. Continue reading →
